FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT VICTORIA FALLS
- How big are the falls? The falls are 1708 metres
wide and 107m deep, with a maximum flow rate of 550,000 cubic metres
of water every minute.
- Is it better to stay in Zambia or Zimbabwe side of the
Falls? The views are considered better from the Zimbabwean
side although the Zambian side is considered better for adventure
activities. The town Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) has greater cultural
attractions.
- Best times of the year to visit? Although the
falls are open all year round, May to August is considered a better
time to visit as the falls are not in full flow, there is less spray
allowing better views of the actual waterfalls. The falls in full
flood are also spectacular (February to April), sending spray plumes
over 1km up above, although views of the actual falls are very limited.
- How long should I stay at the Falls? We recommend
an ideal length of stay of between 2-3 days
- Victoria Falls as a African travel hub? There
are international airports on both the Zimbabwean and Zambian side
of the falls, with good access from Johannesburg airport. Victoria
Falls is less than 90 minutes drive from Chobe National park and
is the point where 4 countries converge (Botswana, Namibia, Zambia
and Zimbabwe)
- Visa requirements? Please consult your consulate,
but visa can usually be obtained on arrival.
- Should I stay in a hotel or lodge at Victoria Falls?
Lodges generally offer a more personal experience and rates are
on a full board basis (some including boat cruises and game drives)
whereas hotels are on a bed and breakfast basis and activities need
to be arranged separately. Hotels are usually within walking distance
to various vantage points of the falls, while lodges tend to be
further away.
