Days 1: Windhoek to Swakopmund on the Desert Express
Upon arrival at Windhoek (the capital of Namibia) you will be met by a South Africa 365 representative and welcomed to the start of your Namibian Romance tour. At Windhoek station, the boarding call spurs you into action to board the Desert Express, Namibia’s unique overnight rail experience.
Slowly the train departs, leaving the city far behind. Soon the hustle and bustle of civilisation is only a distant memory. The rhythmic swaying of the coaches gently soothes and relaxes. Seemingly endless semi-arid savannah, wide expanses of gravel plains and golden-red dune seas lie ahead as you embark on a magical journey as you make your way to Swakopmund.
Late afternoon brings the train to a halt for a game drive and the chance to see some of Namibia’s intriguing wildlife. Dinner brings on succulent offerings of the finest Namibian venison or seafood accompanied by an outstanding bouquet of choice wines. As darkness sets in, the train again comes to a halt. Stars appear like you have never seen them before, flickering in the sky, almost close enough to touch. The symphony of silence is interrupted only by the taunting of geckos and the howling of jackals.
One overnight aboard the Desert Express train including accommodation, dinner, breakfast and excursions.
Days 2 – 3: Swakopmund
You are met at Swakopmund train station and transferred a short distance to Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre. As Namibia second largest town and the holiday capital of the country, Swakopmund has a fantastic mix of architecture, characters and activities.
Founded in 1892, Swakopmund was the main harbour of German South West Africa (Namibia) and built due to the increased traffic between Germany and its colony. The architecture is one of a German village stuck in time, with many of the old buildings well maintained.
Optional adventure activities include sandboarding, quad biking, dune carting, parachuting and fishing. For those looking for something a little more relaxed, restaurants, cafes, art galleries and museums abound.
Two overnights at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre on a bed and breakfast basis including scheduled activities.
Days 4 - 5: The Namib Desert, Kulala Wilderness Camp
After breakfast you depart by light aircraft and fly over the rippling dunes of the Namib and Sossusvlei. The flight offers breathtaking desert and Skeleton Coast scenery, where the dunes and the desert meet the Atlantic Ocean. You pass over the site of the Eduard Bolen shipwreck, Conception Bay and the wreck site of the Shaunee, around Sandwich Harbour and its famous lagoon; you see the flamingoes at Walvis Bay and eventually land in Kulala Wilderness Camp approximately a 1.5 hour's flight away.
Kulala Wilderness Camp is a ten-roomed camp combining the best of romance and luxury. The camp is situated in the heart of the Namib Desert on a 21,000-hectare private reserve near Sossusvlei. The thatched canvas chalets are elevated on wooden decks above the hot desert, and the flat rooftop is the ideal setting to sleep under a canvas of stars.
During your stay in the Namib Desert you can partake in inclusive activities such as scenic drives in 4x4 vehicles and a safari which takes you to the very end of the seasonal Tsauchab River and on to the heart of Sossusvlei, where fantastic photo opportunities of the vast sea of red sand dunes abound. In the late afternoon, time is yours to explore the reserve around the camp.
The highlight of your stay at Kulala Wilderness Camp is your sunrise hot-air ballooning adventure high above the Namib. Once the balloon is airborne you drift silently over the dunes for about an hour. The views of the Namib Desert are exceptional. On landing (wherever the wind has taken you) a champagne breakfast will be waiting for you.
Two overnights at Kulala Wilderness Camp on a full board basis and hot-air ballooning and other scheduled activities.
Days 6: Return to Windhoek
After breakfast, you bid farewell to your Namibian Romance tour and catch your return flight to Windhoek (approximately 1 hour away).
