Centred around the breeding of the largest bird in the world, the Ostrich, Oudtshoorn accounts for more than 70% of all ostrich products worldwide and a visit to one of the ostrich farms will be sure to delight (especially the kids!) you can watch ostrich races, stand on a virtually unbreakable ostrich egg and even ride an ostrich if you so desire!
Grand houses dating back to 1810 remain unchanged and in pristine condition and transport you back to an age of corsets and chivalry. We recommend Rosenhof Country House and De Opstal Country Lodge within the town of Oudtshoorn, and Swartberg Country Manor for a relaxed farm setting outside of town under the Swartberg Mountain range.
A must see are the Cango Caves, rated as one of the best limestone caves in the world. Massive chambers filled with stalagmites and stalactites stretch deep underground and guided tours will take you to the aptly named Devils Chimney, a narrow crawl through that’s definitely not for the faint hearted.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN THE KLEIN KAROO AND ROUTE 62
For a malaria-free safari experience within driving distance to Cape Town, we recommend Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. This offers a holistic safari experience in pristine surroundings, and is suitable to clients that have already experienced safaris in high wildlife concentration areas or looking to unwind.
Near the quaint town of Swellendam you will find Jan Harmsgat Country House. Dating back to 1723, this offers spacious relaxation on a farm setting.
