The town of Vilanculosis the gateway to the beautiful Bazaruto archipelago. A monument to its colonial Portuguese past, Vilanculos’s faded glory contrasts strikingly to the incredible turquoise sea and the archipelago’s five main islands – Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Banqué.
In the far north lies paradise - Pemba and the Quirimbas Archipelago, a chain of 32 idyllic tropical islands stretching for 100 kilometers to the border with Tanzania. Here you’ll find some of the world’s richest coral reefs and most abundant marine life.
Getting to Mozambique
Several airlines provide daily flights between Johannesburg and Maputo, including LAM, British Airways and SAA. LAM (the Mozambique national carrier) also provides domestic flights connecting Maputo to Inhambane, Pemba and Vilanculos.
Direct flights are available daily between Johannesburg and Vilanculos Airport. Flights are also available from Kruger Mpumulanga airport to Vilanculos (which combine for a superb beach and bush experience), although these are limited to two departures weekly. Islands hops are available from Vilanculos airport on the mainland to Benguerra and Bazaruto islands.
Flights to Mozambique are limited in supply and expensive in comparison to other African destinations.
