Pilansberg and Magaliesberg

The Pilansberg and Magaliesberg are located near Sun City in South Africa’s North West Province which is home to some of the finest game reserves in the country.

Consisting of a flat top of quartzite rock and red coloured sediments, the Magaliesberg Mountain looms up like a huge 120km long wall. The slopes and summit are richly wooded and numerous streams have their source on the ridge. In former years, this region was renowned for its game, unfortunately trigger-happy trophy hunters have for the most part shot out the game.

The ledges have always been a good nesting place for vultures, who seem be under the impression that the local hang-gliders are simply larger birds. The vultures have been known to take off and fly alongside them in perfect synchronization. The village of Magaliesburg is in the southern hills of the Magaliesberg Mountains. Both the village and the mountain are named after the chief of the Po people, Magali, who lived in this part of the world when the Voortrekkers arrived. The main crops are tobacco, citrus and tropical fruits grown in the valleys between the foothills.

Close to the major resort of Sun City in a 27km extinct volcano, is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve. This game reserve declared in 1979, is the third largest in the country. It now contains most of the mammals found in Southern Africa and over 300 species of birds. The main attraction of the park, apart from the game, is the man-made lake called Mankwe meaning place of the leopard. Many visitors to Sun City take a short safari in the Pilansberg.
