Limpopo - Land of the Baobab
Ancient indigenous forests and cycads, vast mountains and hot savannah plains lie untouched by the passage of time in South Africa's northernmost province - the Limpopo. Home of the Baobab, the legendary 'upside down tree', the Limpopo is rich in natural bush and wildlife and offers panoramic views, crystal waterfalls and a unique view into Southern Africa's ancient kingdoms.
This beautiful landscape hides many important archaeological and cultural sites, most notably, Thulamela and the world heritage site of Mapungubwe. This area was said to be the centre of the largest kingdom in the sub-continent before it was abandoned in the 14th century and it is here where the Mapngubwe royal family's golf foil rhino, sceptre and bowl were excavated.
Highlights of the Limpopo are the Valley of the Olifants, a fruit bearing river valley and access point to the Kruger Park, the Soutpansberg, a densely forested mountain range characterized by the mighty baobab tree and the Magoebaskloof Pass, a beautiful drive along an escarpment following the Great Letaba River.
