Kgalagadi Region and the Land of Thirst
Kgalagadi, meaning ‘land of thirst’ in an immense desert-like region in north-western South Africa and makes up part of the great Kalahari Desert which is the largest continuous area of sand in the world.
This unspoilt eco-system characterized by vast stretches of red sand dunes and sparse vegetation and is home to Africa’s first transfrontier park, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park which is a joint venture between South Africa and Botswana. Created by merging the South African Kalahari Gemsbok Park and Botswana’s Gemsbok Park the transfrontier park now covers an area of more than 2.5million km.
The homeof the black-maned Kalahari lions, the park provides sanctuary to leopards, cheetah, spotted hyena, wild dog, black-backed jackal, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, endemic herds of antelope, reptiles and over 200 species of birds. Visitors to the park can travel freely between the two countries and enjoy the peace and quiet that the endless rolling dunes and spectacular sunsets offer.
