The Skeleton Coast

Whether due to the numerous, dramatic shipwrecks along its rugged coastline, a spooky atmosphere and restricted diamond fields demarcated by skulls and crossbones have earned the Skeleton Coast its name.
Even the weather is sinister here as the harsh sun is rivalled by the chilly sea breezes and dense, eerie fog that blows in across the cold Benguela current.

Skeleton Coast Safaris -

Skeleton Coast safaris are highly rewarding even though it is hard to imagine a more hostile environment for desert elephants, black rhinos, brown hyena and the occasional shipwrecked sailor - survival here is definitely for the fittest. During your Skeleton Coast safari you will see numerous bones scattered along its beaches which bear witness to this ruthless, almost murderous landscape.

The Skeleton Coast National Park -

The Skeleton Coast National Park stretches from the Ugab river on its southern boundary to the Kunene river, which marks its northern limits. You will encounter magnificent landscapes during your time at the Skeleton National Park - ranging from windswept dunes, to rugged canyons and extensive mountain ranges, not forgetting the sandy beaches along the coastline itself, broken only by huge, formidable rocky outcrops.

Other Skeleton Coast Highlights -

Although a Skeleton Coast safari may be what you're after be sure not to miss out on the areas other fantastic attractions. Places of particular interest to visit include the clay castles of the Hoarisib, the salt pans near the Agate mountain, and one of the largest seal colonies in the world numbering tens of thousands of Cape fur seals at Cape Cross.

Running inland alongside the Skeleton Coast is Damaraland, another one of Namibia's most beautiful and scenic areas. Evidence once more of this country's reputation for stark contrasts.
