The West Coast
A short drive northwest of Cape Town brings you to the start of the West Coast, a semi-arid yet beautiful stretch of coastline. Icy blue seas, filled with kelp and framed by white beaches hide hordes of crayfish and other seafood specialities.
Secret surf spots abound up this stretch of coastline for those tough enough to brave the freezing waters, and for those who aren’t the fishing villages dotting the coast offer affordable accommodation in untouched surroundings. Long walks along deserted beaches and nights spent gazing at the stars after sumptuous seafood dinners make this an ideal getaway.
Around the month of September, depending on the rains, the arid landscape literally springs to life. Magnificent swathes of brightly coloured flowers carpet the ground in an amazing display of colour and beauty. The Spring Flower Festival attracts visitors from around the world as nature presents herself in all her glory.
From the seaside village of Yzerfontein to the West Coast National Park – a bird lover’s paradise - which leads through to the tranquil Langebaan Lagoon a trip up the West Coast gives you a chance to leave the world behind you.
