Money: The currency unit is the Rand, denoted by the symbol R, with 100 cents making up R1 (one Rand). South Africa's banking system is extremely tourist friendly; the major banks have branches and ATM's in all the cities and most major towns. International banks, Thomas Cook and American Express foreign exchange offices are also available in the main cities. Visa and MasterCard are accepted almost everywhere but there are a few small towns where you may find that you must use cash.
